One of the best parts of living in Highlands Ranch is how quickly you can get from your front door to a scenic trail. Whether your family includes toddlers in tow or energetic teens, these nearby hikes offer the perfect blend of fresh air, manageable mileage, and Colorado beauty.
1. Redtail Park Trail – Highlands Ranch
Just off Grigs Road, this paved path loops through Redtail Park and into the surrounding neighborhoods. It’s stroller-friendly, great for scooters and bikes, and has a playground and open grassy space—perfect for a mid-hike picnic.
Distance: 1.2 miles loop
Highlights: Playground, easy terrain, restrooms
2. Highland Heritage Regional Park Trail – Highlands Ranch
This park offers wide, gentle trails with mountain views and lots of room to roam. It’s a local favorite for families who want a nature break close to home. Bonus: there’s a splash pad in the summer!
Distance: 1.5–3 miles depending on route

3. Backcountry Wilderness Area Trails – Highlands Ranch
With 8,200 acres of preserved open space, the Backcountry Wilderness Area is a local treasure. The Wildcat Mountain Trail is a gentle option with expansive views and a chance to spot deer, hawks, or wild turkeys.
Distance: 2.1 miles out-and-back
Highlights: Wildlife sightings, quiet, wide-open views

4. Bluffs Regional Park Trail – Lone Tree
Just 10–15 minutes from Highlands Ranch, this trail offers panoramic views of the Front Range and Denver skyline. It’s a gravel path with gradual elevation, and kids love spotting prairie dogs and hawks.
Distance: 2.7-mile loop
Highlights: Mountain + city views, benches along the trail
5. Waterton Canyon Trail – Littleton
A flat, wide gravel road along the South Platte River makes this perfect for strollers or bikes. You’ll often see bighorn sheep and fly fishermen. You can hike just a mile or two in and turn around when the kids are done.
Distance: Up to 12 miles, but choose your turnaround

6. South Valley Park Trail – Ken Caryl
A short drive away, this trail system feels like a true escape. The Coyote Song Trail is great for kids, winding through red rock formations with minimal elevation. It’s scenic and not too crowded.

7. Daniels Park Trail – Castle Pines
